Starting Out With the Right Cycling Gear
Cycling is an excellent form of exercise which is not only fun and sociable, but a practical way of getting around. It's essential to get prepared for the road with the right gear in order to keep safe and comfortable – and there are some key items to consider purchasing before setting off.
Travel Light with versatile clothing
Before you set off, consider how you'll carry essential items with you. For utility riding you'll probably need to buy a backpack – or if you don't like carrying anything on your back, panniers could be the way forward. Road riders however, usually have a small pack under the seat to carry essentials, or they may buy specially designed short sleeve jerseys which have secret compartments and are the perfect option for those wishing to travel light. These jerseys also have several other advantages since they're made out of lightweight, breathable material which keeps the skin fresh and cool. Funkier produce a range of short sleeve jerseys for men and women which feature Quick Dry Active Technology which keeps body moisture away from the skin. Jerseys also come with back pocket and a waterproof pocket for keeping essential items safe and secure.
Protect yourself from the Elements
A waterproof bicycle jacket is another essential investment both for the serious and commuter rider, and there are a number of options to consider. A simple waterproof jacket should suffice for the summer months; however a degree of insulation will be required in colder weather, so a fleece lining is a good idea. Bicycle Jackets should also make their owners visible so one which features reflective zips also makes for a good investment.
Keep comfort in mind
Padded bicycle shorts are pretty much an essential item for any cyclist riding more than 20 km a day, so get a pair which has a great fit (the more panels the better) and which are made out of a lightweight flexible material such as Lycra or Spandex for optimum movement. Funkier bicycle shorts feature a polyamide/spandex fabric combination which allows for a perfect fit – and, since they come in a wide number of striking designs, there's also the opportunity to stand out from the crowd. For those on a more leisurely bike ride, baggy cycling shorts are ideal – but look for shorts which are water resistant and have an adjustable waist for a great fit.
